What's In It For Them?

So why are these guys getting in touch?   I say guys in the sense of young male people.  It's almost never an actual female.

In Ghana the average.monthly wage for an agricultural labourer is $15.  So what rich westerners like me spend on a cup of coffee would feed a family for a week.  You might feel a bit guilty about that - I urge you, if you do, to donate the price of a cup of coffee to a legitimate charity like Oxfam - there's probably a shop on your High Street.

The scammers will happily take any amount of money - I've had requests from $20 up to $11,500.  The usual request is $200 though - a year's wages.  So you can see their motive.

How do they get in touch?  In my case I am pretty sure that it's because I am active on social media.  They join a discussion group and lurk.  When someone pops their head above a parapet, they send a friend request.   A big red flag is that their friends are all fat old bald men (hey, I'm a fat old bald man, I'm not judging here).  Obviously as a member of the FOBM community, I'm supposed to be flattered that some Gorgeous Young Babe wants to be my friend.

Scammers hunt women, too.  Here the photos tend to be of ruggedly handsome doctors - think George Clooney - or US Army Generals, usually based in Iraq or Afghanistan.  Rarely anything less than the rank of Colonel, because what woman wants to hook up with a Corporal when she can have a Brigadier?  Not infrequently, the scammer is an Army Medic, so you lucky ladies get two for the price of one - strong and sensitive, handsome and caring!

I would not be at all surprised to learn that the same scammers have Gorgeous Young Babe and Ruggedly Handsome General identities

The Chinese Bitcoin Scammer

A pretty Chinese woman sends me a friend request.  She doesn't fit the pattern of the West African love scammers.  No boobs, for a start.   She seems pleasant enough, so I chat and wait for the scam to make itself apparent.   It's much more subtle than the love scammers.  In fact, to start with, if I didn't know it was a scam, I wouldn't be able to tell.  Eventually she gets to the point.  She has been investing in cryptocurrency and wants me to join in.   Yu Qing Ning is clearly doing well, but sadly my friend Josef Vissarionovitch lost $200k in a recent crypto crash (there's always a recent example of people losing vast amounts).  Miss Yu gives up and vanishes from my life.   It seems that Miss Yu isn't for real, to my amazement.  But I would never have guessed that she was a modern slave in a Burmese scam factory.  Check out this CNN exposé Here's where Miss Yu comes from

So Why Hangouts?

Almost all the beautiful girls who want to share my life online try to persuade me to stop using Messenger and change to WhatsApp or Google Hangouts. Obviously they are up to no good, s o, naturally, I don't want to do this.   I do have WhatsApp, and even use it.   And I have had Google Hangouts ever since Mr and Mrs Google first invented it, though I haven't used it for years and years.   But of course I'm not going to say that to the scammers.   So first way to mess with their heads is to feign ignorance.  Well, I've worked in Tech Support, I can do ignorance.   "What is WhatsApp?" "Oh, for chatting on line?  I use a thing called Messenger" "How much does it cost?  Really?  Excellent" "Oh, I don't know how to do that stuff" Eventually she persuades me to try to download it from the App Store "Access Denied" "Am I doing something wrong?" Eventually I sug...

Welcome to Scammerama!

There's a beautiful girl half my age who wants to be my friend on Facebook.  Oddly, despite being utterly gorgeous and a beauty queen from Brazil to boot, Ellie Zwonke has only been on Facebook for two days and has no friends at all.  And she has chosen me, fat old balding guy, to fall in love with and wants to share her life with me.  I suppose I must be irresistible to women?  I don't like to boast, but hot babes get in touch every day.  Models, students, fashion designers, all sorts of cuties.  Curiously, although they come from Florida, Texas and California in the main, they almost all now live in Kumasi, Ghana.  Now I've never been to Kumasi, but listen guys, the density of hot blondes in the population must be quite astonishing.  Now before you go on the Air Ghana website to enquire about tickets, let me share with you this photo of Elizabeth Sarpong: Elizabeth has another photo in her profile, and oddly enough, it...
