Where do scammers get their pictures from? Well, unsurprisingly, they nick them.


Sometimes they forget to crop the source from the bottom corner of the picture - so they send a picture of a pretty girl from a Lingerie catalogue with a link to the catalogue.  


Occasionally they don't bother to make up a new name, and re-use the name of a gorgeous pouting model girl on Instagram 


 Sometimes If you do a Reverse Image Search, it will find the source website.  


And sometimes I find all three. As in the case of Janessa Brazil, a Brazilian porn star. A lot of scammers use her pics, and a lot of guys fall for the scam

A pretty Chinese woman sends me a friend request.  She doesn't fit the pattern of the West African love scammers.  No boobs, for a start.   She seems pleasant enough, so I chat and wait for the scam to make itself apparent.   It's much more subtle than the love scammers.  In fact, to start with, if I didn't know it was a scam, I wouldn't be able to tell.  Eventually she gets to the point.  She has been investing in cryptocurrency and wants me to join in.   Yu Qing Ning is clearly doing well, but sadly my friend Josef Vissarionovitch lost $200k in a recent crypto crash (there's always a recent example of people losing vast amounts).  Miss Yu gives up and vanishes from my life.   It seems that Miss Yu isn't for real, to my amazement.  But I would never have guessed that she was a modern slave in a Burmese scam factory.  Check out this CNN exposé Here's where Miss Yu comes from

So Why Hangouts?

Almost all the beautiful girls who want to share my life online try to persuade me to stop using Messenger and change to WhatsApp or Google Hangouts. Obviously they are up to no good, s o, naturally, I don't want to do this.   I do have WhatsApp, and even use it.   And I have had Google Hangouts ever since Mr and Mrs Google first invented it, though I haven't used it for years and years.   But of course I'm not going to say that to the scammers.   So first way to mess with their heads is to feign ignorance.  Well, I've worked in Tech Support, I can do ignorance.   "What is WhatsApp?" "Oh, for chatting on line?  I use a thing called Messenger" "How much does it cost?  Really?  Excellent" "Oh, I don't know how to do that stuff" Eventually she persuades me to try to download it from the App Store "Access Denied" "Am I doing something wrong?"
